Who… Me?
“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’”
— Exodus 3:11
Moses was not standing in a temple when God called him.
He was tending sheep.
Then he noticed something strange, a bush burning without being consumed. Scripture says, “When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush” (Exodus 3:4).
Moses stopped what he was doing long enough to notice.
I wonder sometimes if God speaks more than we realize, but we are too distracted to pay attention.
I wonder how I would react if God spoke to me through a burning bush.
Would I run?
Would fear make me doubt myself?
Would I still try explaining why He picked the wrong person?
Because even standing in front of something miraculous, Moses still questioned himself.
I totally understand that because Sometimes people make me anxious. I overthink everything.
What if I say the wrong thing?
What if I look awkward?
What if nobody talks to me?
I know what it feels like to shrink back quietly inside your own mind before you ever step into a room.
And that is why Moses feels so relatable to me.
Because when God called him, Moses immediately focused on all the reasons he felt unqualified.
Who, me?
Surely there was someone better for the job. Someone more confident. Someone better with words. Someone people would actually listen to.
I feel that way too.
I do not have a huge following or endless notifications. I’m not the loudest person in the room or naturally confident. I’m just a quiet, shy girl from Alabama trying to follow Jesus the best I can.
I think that’s why Moses and I would probably get along.
Because I understand what it feels like to question yourself before you ever take the first step.
The truth is Moses’ response feels surprisingly familiar.
Most of us feel unqualified when God calls us to do something that requires faith.
Maybe God nudges us to start a Bible study, share our testimony, apply for a job, volunteer, forgive someone, or take a step we’ve never taken before.
And our first response sounds a lot like Moses:
“I don’t know enough.”
“I’m not ready.”
“I don’t have the education, the money, the wisdom, or the strength.”
“Surely someone else would do it better.”
We focus on everything we lack while God focuses on what He can do through a willing heart.
Moses focused on his weakness:
“I am slow of speech and tongue.”
— Exodus 4:10
In other words, “I’m not qualified.”
But God responded:
“Who gave human beings their mouths? … Is it not I, the Lord?”
— Exodus 4:11
Moses kept focusing on what he lacked while God kept reminding him who He was.
God was never asking Moses to rely on himself.
He was simply asking him to trust the One who was calling him.
And maybe today, if you’re asking the same question Moses asked
“Who, me?”
The answer is:
“Yes, you.”
Questions for Reflection
Have you ever felt like God was asking you to do something beyond your abilities?
What fear is causing you to ask, “Who… me?”
Where is God calling you to trust Him instead of yourself?
Prayer
Father,
When I feel unqualified, remind me that You don’t ask me to rely on my own strength. Help me trust that if You call me, You will equip me. Give me the courage to say “yes” even when I’m afraid, knowing that You will be with me every step of the way.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
